Oldest of the British birth cohort studies. It is unique in having data from birth on the health and social circumstances . Objectives: Scientific discovery of life course, influences on normal and healthy ageing, Transfer of knowledge to policymakers, health practitioners, and other research users.
The study set up to address these questions:
1. why the national fertility rate had been falling consistently since the middle of the 19th century?;
2. what was the national distribution and use of obstetric medical and midwifery services, and how far do they prevent premature and infant death, and promote the health of mothers and infants?
