To estimate dementia prevalence in older Mexican Americans, determine the distribution of dementia by etiology, and evaluate the contribution of type 2 diabetes mellitus, stroke, and apolipoprotein E (ApoE) genotype to dementia.

- Participants were followed every 12-15 months via home visits that included clinical and cognitive assessments. A semiannual phone call was made to obtain updates on medications, health events, and some sociodemographic risk factors.
