The original aims of the survey were to provide an epidemiological description of childhood asthma, which has a variable natural history requiring:
1. an estimate of its prevalence among children of a suitable age;
2. an estimate of the probability that an individual will change disease status during any given period;
3. an estimate of any secular trend, specifically any tendency for the incidence to vary over time.

- The baseline 1968 study received its initial funding in 1967 from the Tasmanian Asthma Foundation, and since that time the study has received funding from several sources for different follow-up waves and components of the study. Funding bodies have included the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia (grants #299901, #454425, #566931 #628513 and #1021275); Clifford Craig Medical Research Trust of Tasmania; Victorian, Queensland, and Tasmanian Asthma Foundations; the Australian Lung Foundation; Helen Macpherson Smith Trust; Royal Hobart Hospital Research Foundation; GlaxoSmithKline and the University of Melbourne
